Summer’s Seasonal Tradition “Aquarium Fair”
Spreading the Charm of Nishikigoi at an Ornamental Fish Festival

The “Aquarium Fair in FUTAKO TAMAGAWA” held every summer at Futako Tamagawa Rise, Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. This event has become established as one where people can experience the appeal of ornamental fish up close, and this year it took place on August 30th and August 31st.
Organized by the Japan Ornamental Fish Promotion Business Cooperative (JOFA), this event features a diverse range of ornamental fish, including Nishikigoi, goldfish, medaka, and tropical fish, as well as engaging activities for both children and adults, such as goldfish scooping, free distribution of various ornamental fish, and workshops. Each year, many families and enthusiasts visit the venue, making it a beloved summer tradition in Futako Tamagawa.
With the aim of “conveying that aquariums bring healing to life,” the content has expanded each year, including aesthetically pleasing display aquariums and freshwater fish exhibits. The event has evolved into an interactive experience with participatory projects like the “Goldfish Master Competition” and the “Medaka Contest,” allowing visitors to actively enjoy themselves.
From the Nishikigoi industry, the All Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association and Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture exhibited. With content easy even for young children to participate in, such as Nishikigoi judging experiences and creating original postcards, the tent was constantly bustling with people.
The free distribution of various ornamental fish is so popular that numbered tickets are quickly snatched up every year. Some visitors even start keeping Nishikigoi, inspired by the Nishikigoi aquariums on display, indicating that the circle of ornamental fish keeping is steadily expanding.
The cooperative stated, “By conveying the charm of ornamental fish to many people, we want to provide an opportunity for beginners to start keeping them and invigorate the entire industry.”
The Aquarium Fair, which colors the summer of Futako Tamagawa, seems likely to further expand this aquatic world where you can “See, Touch, and Be Healed.”
