The 56th All Japan Nishikigoi Show, was held from January 20th to 25th at the Tokyo Ryutsu Center’s First Exhibition Hall in Ota-ku, Tokyo. The 20th and 21st were used for venue setup, and on the 22nd, a total of 1,995 koi were delivered from all over the country. Judging took place on Friday the 23rd, the de facto opening day.
After the judging meeting concluded at 9:00 AM, a total of 81 judges (divided into 14 teams) entered the venue, with Yutaka Suga, Honorary Advisor of the All Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association, serving as Chief Judge. First, all judges jointly selected the Grand Champion. This year, each team was assigned one director or regional director to serve as team leader.
The two koi considered the strongest contenders this year were / the Kohaku that won the Grand Champion title two shows ago at the 54th show, and the Taisho Sanshoku that won the Gigantic Koi Grand Champion for two consecutive shows (54th and 55th). Due to the rule that the Grand Champion cannot be entered the following year, the Kohaku was entered again after a one-show hiatus. All eyes were on whether the Sanshoku could succeed on its third attempt. Both exhibited impressive physiques surpassing their previous appearances.
On the other hand, there were also “new faces” that generated buzz upon arrival, suggesting a closely contested race and raising expectations for the birth of a memorable champion.
In the first round of voting, nine koi received votes. Entry No. 1032, a 95bu Kohaku, received the most votes with 29, followed by No. 2121, also a 95bu Kohaku, with 20 votes, and No. 2313, a 95bu Taisho Sanshoku, with 12 votes. As no koi achieved a majority, these top three were moved to the nomination pool for a second round of voting.
As a result, the Kohaku No. 1032, which was first in the first round, steadily gained votes, securing 41 votes—just over half—and was crowned Grand Champion.
