— Could you tell us about the features of the measuring device made by Ikarashi Products?

Koki:Typical measuring devices are plastic, which can warp over time due to ageing or heat. However, ours are made of aluminium and relatively more durable. We offer two colour options—silver and black. The black version, in particular, undergoes an anodizing process, which creates an artificial oxide layer on the surface. This makes it highly resistant to scratches, corrosion, and wear.

To prevent injury to the koi, we’ve added a resin guard along the edges of the cut surfaces. It also helps protect users from getting hurt, making the product safe and user-friendly.

— I see there are two colour options available: silver and black.

Koki:While having actual breeders use the product, we received much feedback that the measurement markings were hard to read. So, we improved visibility by adding white markings on a black base, making it easier to see and giving it a sleek, stylish look.

In addition, the measurement markings are engraved using laser processing, so they don’t fade easily over time. It makes the product highly durable and suitable for long-term use.

— I understand that you also offer the option to add a custom logo?

Koki: Yes. While specific designs may be more challenging to handle, we can generally engrave almost any design, including names and logos, to create fully customized products. However, as I mentioned earlier, the black version requires anodizing, so it takes more time to produce.

— Are there multiple size options available?

Koki: There are three options—large, medium, and small. The ones introduced at the international Junior Koi Show measure 86 cm, 62 cm, and 52 cm, respectively. Like the feeder holders, there are many types of tubs in various sizes and shapes besides the commonly used “Summit round tubs.” We plan to gather feedback from users as they try them out and continue improving the sizes to make them easy for anyone to use.

— Did you receive a strong response at the International Junior Koi Show?

Koki: Yes. It was our first time promoting our products in such a public setting, and we participated as a trial opportunity to showcase what we offer. While we have become well known in Yamakoshi, we are still relatively unknown outside the area. Opportunities like this allowed many more people to learn about our company.

Also, although we had received orders from koi dealers before, there were many people we had never met in person. So, exhibiting was an excellent opportunity to meet and talk with them face-to-face.

— When talking directly with industry professionals, did you receive requests for original or custom-made products?

Koki: Yes. They are full of ideas, so we receive a lot of requests. Their feedback gives us valuable hints for developing new products.
— I understand. You’re creating products that truly reflect the users’ needs and feedback on the ground.Koki:  We are very grateful to receive many projects, but our workforce is limited since there are only three of us. We want to do many things but simply cannot at the moment. Even when we receive orders for original custom products, we often can’t respond immediately, which can be frustrating. Therefore, we are focusing on raising awareness and encouraging the use of the products we currently sell, such as measuring devices and feeder holders.

— These days, I’ve been seeing Ikarashi’s measuring devices at many koi breeders’ facilities.

Koki: We’re grateful that many koi breeders within the prefecture are now using our products. I handle manufacturing and sales, so please contact me if you have any feedback.

— We look forward to your continued product development rooted in the local community. Thank you very much for your time today.
