After a year, Nishikigoi exports to China have resumed.
Authorisation has been granted to six companies in Niigata, Hiroshima and Fukuoka.
At present, 80% of all Nishikigoi bred are exported overseas, with China accounting for around 20% of this total. However, since the Chinese authorities did not proceed with the necessary procedures to update the quarantine facilities required for exports, it has not been possible to export Nishikigoi to China since November last year.
The Japanese government had been working for over a year to get the export ban lifted, but now that an agreement has been reached between Japan and China, the export ban has been lifted.
When the actual export takes place, it is said that procedures such as inspections and quarantine will be required based on the agreed-upon sanitary conditions, but those involved say that shipments are expected to resume by the end of November.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the six producers that have been approved for quarantine facilities and have received export permission are Isa Koi Farm (Niigata), Hoshikin Koi Farm (Niigata), Nishikigoi Niigata Direct (Niigata), Marujyu Koi Farm (Niigata), Konishi Koi Farm (Hiroshima), and Ogata Koi Farm (Fukuoka).
On Tuesday 5th November, the International Import Expo, where companies from all over the world gather to introduce their products, was held in Shanghai, China. At the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) booth, there was an introduction to koi-related products and an AI-based koi evaluation app were on hand to provide information, including an introduction to koi-related products and an AI-based koi evaluation app. (Photo: courtesy of Kazuki Sato, Overseas Sales Expansion, All Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association)
