The 49th Hokkaido Nishikigoi Show
17 May 2026
Venue: Sanchoku Fresh Market, Hiraoka Branch (Sapporo, Hokkaido)
Held in the car park of the Hiraoka Branch of Sanchoku Fresh Market, a supermarket chain operating seven branches centred on Sapporo, and 16 branches in total including partner outlets. This is a small-scale, community-organised Koi show run jointly by members of the Hokkaido Nishikigoi Enthusiasts’ Society and their families.
Judging, conducted solely by Mr Katsuyuki Hoshino of Hoshikin Koi Farm, began at 9.30 am. The Grand Champion title was awarded to a 70bu Showa sanshoku entered by Mr Hideo Takadaru (Dearest Club Ltd). This three-year-old fish, measuring 68 cm, was bred by Isa Koi Farm; it was acquired from the farm last autumn and has since been reared by Dearest Club Ltd. This marks Mr Takadaru’s second consecutive victory at this competition. Furthermore, the Grand Champion in the Young Koi category (for Koi under 40 bu), which is the top prize in the under-40bu division, was a 40bu Kohaku entered by Mr Ken Unoki. Bred by Marudo Koi Farm, it was purchased from Koibokujo.
The number of entries for this competition was 114, 10 more than the previous event. This can certainly be seen as a positive step forward in the run-up to next year’s 50th anniversary competition.
