Aiming for Larger Sizes and Higher Rankings in 30-ton Ponds
JPD Product Development Driven by Real Environments〈Part1〉
Mr. Ryuichi Yoshida, president of Japan Pet Drugs Co., Ltd. (JPD), is not only a business leader but also renowned as a passionate koi lover. Our magazine has frequently featured his previous breeding ponds, and last summer marked the completion of a full-scale 30-ton pond. Recently, with the installation of the company’s automatic feeder and the release of most koi previously housed at professional breeders’ facilities, the pond has truly reached its final form.
Moving forward, this space will not only intensify Mr. Yoshida’s efforts in breeding and preparing koi for exhibitions but will also serve as a live testing ground for JPD’s product development. His fervent descriptions reveal the ambitious vision behind every meticulous detail.
The pond measures 7m × 3.5m with a depth of 1.5m (water level at 1.2m), constructed with concrete blocks and holding approximately 30 tons of water. Though outdoors, about half is roof-covered to shield from direct sunlight while enhancing rainy-day viewing and operational convenience. Filter tanks and water channels are concealed beneath wooden panels, creating harmony with the deck. The living room offers a frontal view of the pond, which has reportedly impressed international guests.
The black-painted walls prominently display JPD’s logo. Two Wakishimizu circulation units also feature anti-weathering black coatings, simultaneously embodying Mr. Yoshida’s private koi sanctuary and the company’s flagship demonstration pond.
Water circulates from the pond’s lowest point—a 20cm sloped base—into filter tanks. After processing by two Yuseisei-20 units, it travels through a semicircular channel before gently returning via dual outlets. The deepest section connects to a drainage sump, with filter tank bottom water discharged twice daily through this system.
