Aiming for Larger Sizes and Higher Rankings in 30-ton Ponds

JPD Product Development Driven by Real Environments〈Part2〉

Mr. Ryuichi Yoshida, president of Japan Pet Drugs Co., Ltd. (JPD), is not only a business leader but also renowned as a passionate koi lover. Our magazine has frequently featured his previous breeding ponds, and last summer marked the completion of a full-scale 30-ton pond. Recently, with the installation of the company’s automatic feeder and the release of most koi previously housed at professional breeders’ facilities, the pond has truly reached its final form.
Moving forward, this space will not only intensify Mr. Yoshida’s efforts in breeding and preparing koi for exhibitions but will also serve as a live testing ground for JPD’s product development. His fervent descriptions reveal the ambitious vision behind every meticulous detail.

The more you use it, the more you appreciate its value
Safeguard koi’s health with feed, with up to 12 feedings possible

― This spring, your company released the automatic feeder “FEEDER PRO”, which has of course been installed in President Yoshida’s pond as well. This truly marks the completion of the pond in every sense.
Yoshida: We collaborated with Fukunobu Electric Co., Ltd. to launch this FEEDER PRO as the JPD model. After actually using it in my own pond, I’ve come to appreciate its merits anew. What particularly impresses me is that it disperses feed over a wider left-right range than I had imagined.
― Is it because of the wide-angle effect?
Yoshida: The feed spreads out to both sides, and in my pond, the water flow from the aeration system carries the feed to about two-thirds of the area. In some ponds, the feed can cover almost the entire surface, so the koi can eat no matter where they are. With manual feeding, the range is narrower, and the koi would swarm to one spot, which made me worried about collisions. But with the Feeder Pro, that concern is significantly reduced.
We thought we understood the benefits of the feeder through discussions with various people and our company’s experiments, but using it myself gave me a real appreciation. It’s only been two weeks since installation, but I can already see the koi getting broader. The koi I thought needed more bulk and the smaller ones that were losing out in feeding competitions are visibly growing now. My recommended feeding frequency is 6 to 8 times a day, but after the rainy season ends, I’ll challenge myself with 12 times. This is based on using our JPD Food products like ‘Shogun,’ ‘Yokozuna,’ and ‘Medicarp MAX,’ which specialize in digestion, absorption, and health maintenance, while adjusting the frequency according to the situation.
