Koi hobbyist interview Geert Schrijvers(Netherlands)

The Dream-Chasing Journey of
Dutch Koi Master Geert Schrijvers

The renowned European koi enthusiast, Mr. Geert Schrijvers, was deeply captivated by the sight of koi swimming gracefully in his father-in-law’s garden many years ago, embarking on a wondrous journey with these magnificent fish ever since. Especially his Asagi, which achieved brilliant results, participated in various Koi and won countless awards and honors.

“Every koi is a unique work of art,” Geert said. “Their ever-changing colors never fail to surprise me.” As an active member of the World Koi Federation, he frequently organizes exchange events for Dutch koi hobbyists and has personally sponsored numerous youth educational seminars on koi knowledge.

Geert believes that koi keeping is not just a hobby but a philosophy of life—one that teaches patience and the appreciation of life’s beautiful transformations. He often warmly invites koi enthusiasts from around the world to visit his eco-friendly pond in the Netherlands, sharing this unique passion that, though rooted in the East, now blossoms brilliantly in Dutch culture.

―When did you start your Koi Hobby Journey?

Geert: I began my koi journey in 2003 with a small pond of 5 cubic meters. Initially, my koi were of lower quality, but that changed when I discovered a nearby company that imported koi from Japan. I was instantly captivated by the beauty of these koi, and that sparked my passion for the hobby. Despite the high cost at the time, my love for koi blossomed.

In 2005, my wife and I moved to the center of the Netherlands to a larger house with an even bigger garden. This gave me the opportunity to build a new, much larger pond—this time a 30 cubic meter pond. Building my own filtration system was a new and exciting challenge, and I was able to accommodate larger fish. On weekends, my friends and I would visit koi dealers and other hobbyists to admire their koi and ponds.

After relocating back to the southern part of the Netherlands, I spent eight years without a pond. However, after an extensive house extension, my garden became a construction zone, presenting me with the perfect chance to build an even larger pond—now a 100 cubic meter pond.
