―Do you have a favorite koi variety?
Geert: In the early years, I was fond of single-colored koi, but now my favorite is the Go Sanke variety. My number one preference is the Kohaku, followed by the Sanke variant.
―How many trophies have you secured and what are they?
Geert: Yes, I’ve won quite a few awards, both big and small. I’ve secured several major titles in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Japan. My Asagi (Photo 1) has won three Grand Champion titles and also won Supreme Champion in Belgium. I’ve also earned prizes with some Kohaku and a Hi-Utsuri from Shinoda. My two-year-old Sanshoku won the Grand Champion title at the Yonemura Koi Show in Japan. Additionally, a 23 cm Kohaku of mine received awards at both the All Japan Koi Show and Kokugyo prize in the All Japan Young Koi Show in Japan. I also have some koi in Japan that haven’t competed yet, so I’m really looking forward to their future performances!

―What advice would you give to aspiring koi hobbyists?
Geert: My advice is simple: do your own thing, and take your time—there’s no rush. I highly recommend visiting koi farms in Japan or China, as it’s an eye-opening experience. You’ll see the vast difference in quality between local traders and the koi directly sourced from these farms. It will deepen your understanding of koi and enhance your hobby.
―What is your biggest wish or your next goal? Could you share a bit about it?
Geert: My ultimate goal is to win the prestigious All Japan Koi Show. It’s a dream of mine, and while it may be challenging, I remain hopeful that one day I’ll achieve it.

―Why did you join the World Koi Federation?
Geert: I joined the World Koi Federation because I’m always eager to expand my network. I love connecting with people from around the world who share the same passion for koi. It’s great to exchange ideas and experiences with others in the koi community.
―What do you hope the World Koi Federation can do to support the koi industry?
Geert: I hope the World Koi Federation continues to provide a platform for global networking and collaboration. The Federation has the power to bring people together and promote the growth of the koi industry. By fostering international relationships and sharing knowledge, the Federation can play a pivotal role in advancing the hobby and ensuring the quality of koi across the world.
